Dr. Marla Dean is Bright Beginnings’ Next Executive Director
Dear Friends of Bright Beginnings,
The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the selection of Dr. Marla Dean as Bright Beginnings’ next Executive Director.
Dr. Dean, who earned her EdD from the University of Pennsylvania, has over 25 years’ experience as a teacher, principal, mentor, and leader who emphasizes whole child development, data-driven methodology, and community engagement. She began her career as a public school teacher in her native Detroit. Since relocating to the DC area, she has held demanding leadership roles at some of the area’s most challenging schools where she worked to combat some of the complex roadblocks that impede the education of children living in poverty. Most recently, Dr. Dean was the executive director of schools at DC’s Cesar Chavez Schools which serve high needs students, including homeless youth.
Dr. Dean describes herself as a visionary and a born educator, and is excited about joining the Bright Beginnings’ family. The Board feels that her wide-ranging experience in positions of increasing complexity and responsibility will be invaluable as BBI faces the challenges of expansion, and of opening, operating, and sustaining two centers.
The Board and I are extremely grateful to Doris Dupuy, whose leadership as Acting Executive Director since the untimely death of Dr. Betty Jo Gaines has been invaluable. She worked tirelessly to ensure that our children were nurtured and educated, and our goals, regulations, and milestones were met. I am delighted to announce that she has been named Deputy Director and will work closely with Dr. Dean. They will form a formidable team, one that is fortunate to have a stellar group of talented, dedicated managers working with them. Together they will ensure that Bright Beginnings continues to flourish and grow.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Dean into our community. We are excited about the future as we work together to ensure that our children get the bright, sunny start in life that all children—homeless or not—deserve. Thank you for your partnership and support. It has been—and always will be—crucial.
Billie J. McSeveney,
President, Board of Directors
